Update: California BON Application for NCLEX-RN for International Students Requirement Changes

Hi Everyone!

It seems like more and more people are having issues in terms of fulfilling requirements for the California BON specifically for International Students and regarding the license to practice Nursing in the country where they were educated.

Before, if you do not hold a license it seemed to be enough to write a letter of explanation why you do not have one. But now more people are getting letters asking for them to submit a copy of their license despite submitting a letter of explanation.

I did a couple of reading and so far I haven’t seen any official statements from the California BON regarding the issue. But upon inspecting the actual application form I noticed that they removed the part that says if you do not hold a license where you were educated write a letter of explanation. What is stated now is the following: Attach a photocopy of your license or diploma that allows you to practice professional nursing in the country where you were educated.

So for those applying for the California BON please be aware of the changes. Hope this information helps everyone.

I have been reading your site, and am in the same situation as Dennis (FilAm, U.S. citizen, graduated nursing in PI). I applied late January 2008 to California bon, and received a letter asking for date of entry into U.S. if I was a migrant, and a copy of my license or diploma authorizing me to practice in the country where I was educated. I called to clarify, was asked to send in a copy of all pages of my U.S. passport, and I again sent a copy of my diploma with a letter explaining that I did not take the NLE as I intend to work in California and am a U.S. citizen.
Again, I waited, and just today 7/8/08 found out I WAS APPROVED!!! I was told I can now register with Pearson and schedule to take the NCLEX!!

I believe California may be in the ‘process’ of changing their requirements, however, it is not clearly stated on their website. To those of you in my situation, you may want to take the Philippine board right after graduation, just to be certain. It would be a good practice also. I believe a U.S. citizen can take the exam, only not be licensed in the Philippines (with a waiver).

    HI’

I am a US citizen and a psychiatric technician here in California and I enrolled for BSN course in the Philippines (because the financial cost is much cheaper), but I heard from a friend that after finishing the course I am required to take the local board, before I can apply for NCLEX here in US, but I have no intention of working in the Phils. So, am I still required to take the local board in the Phils or can I go and directly apply for NCLEX here in CA without taking any local board? And do I only need diploma and TOR to apply for NCLEX? Thank you.

Hello po..i need ur help regarding the Nclex examination registration form.I recieved my LOE together with the Nclex candidate Bulletin last June 11, 2008.I decided to register thru mail.and now im having a hard time accomplishing the form.

I left the Current mailing address blank for a while because my current address is kinda long and I’m nervous that i might not get it right or not write it the proper way.another problem is the boxes are not enough to accomodate my whole address.

If i provided my E-mail address, do i still need to write my mailing address? (stated on the candidate bulletin that if i choose to provide an e-mail address, all the correspondence from Pearson VUE will arrive ONLY by E-mail.)

    Thanks in Advance!

hi mam joan..I passed the local boards last june and i am planning to take NCLEX and all the necessary exams required to be able to work in the US before i start working here in the philippines as a nurse. Is that possible? Is it true that once you pass the nclex, you have to be able to go abroad before its expiration or you will have to apply all over again..Thanks alot..I enjoy reading all of your answers. They are very helpful to me..

Miss Joan.. your site is really a BIG help for us confused applicants…
I’m planning to take the NCLEX-RN exam hopefully within the next year because I need to complete all the needed requirements for California. My Diploma together with my PRC license will be released on November. I just have this 1 problem. my school is not yet accredited by Ched. i saw that one of the requirments needed is SCHOOL ACCREDITATION. We are the 1st batch of nursing graduates in our university and it’s really confusing becasue they said that our university is autonomous so we dont need to have an accreditation from ched. how can we provide this “school accreditation”?
    thank you.. God bless!!

hi ms. joan! ur website is really a big help in providing us nurses information about NCLEX. i just want to ask you if it is possible to use a close relative’s address in the US for mailing the requirements to California BON? Like me (phils.) – relative (US) – california BON and vice versa. i would like to ask also if the address that I will be placing on the application form will be my address here in the Phils. or my relative’s? thank you very much! =)
