Q&A: Applying In NCLEX-RN CA from Dr. Ian G.

Hi Everyone!
I received an email from a someone named Dr. Ian G. and I thought that it would be good to share with everyone his letter because I am pretty sure a lot of people are in the same situation as him. Here were his questions:
Good day Ms. Joan,
I’m glad that you are there to share your insights on NCLEX RN first takers to assist in the porcessing of the said licensure examination.  I for one is an avid reader of Pinoy BSN coz it helped me a lot in my nursing career updates.  I have just passed this November 2008 Nurse Licensure here in the Philippines.
I am glad that you found my insights helpful. Unfortunately, I am no longer contributing to PinoyBSN though most of my posts there have not yet been removed. A you can see I already established a site of my own dedicated in helping Filipino Nurses and I hope that you would still visit the new site and continue to support me here. Also, congratulations in passing the recent board examination.
Anyways, I would like to ask few things regarding the processing of my NCLEX exams.  To start, I am considering to file my application in California after reading all the tips you have posted on pinoybsn. I have also opened the California Board of Nursing website and have been clarified on few matters. I am actually leaving for the United States this May as a tourist, though no definite date yet since I will be taking my oath this April there in Manila and is scheduled for the IELTS exams this coming April as well. Once the result in my IELTS exams be released will it be needed in my application for NCLEX RN in California?
The IELTS result is not a prerequisite in applying in California Board of Nursing. You will need your IELTS once you apply for VisaScreen once you pass the NCLEX-RN examination.
I would like to ask for your advise on the things I will be taking, like is it better to submit my application once I’m already there or will I mail it ahead of time before I arrive there in the US?
Please be reminded that processing of application for the CA BON may take 3-6 months depending on a lot of factors.
After visiting the Calif BON website, I have come to realize that Live Scan for fingerprinting will be more beneficial on my part since it would take only a week or two to process since I will be available in the US by the time I will file my application, would you suggest the same way?
The LiveScan process indeed is faster but is also a bit more costly. And if you are to submit your application ahead of time then you would have to include the fingerprint card together with your application. But if you decide on processing your papers in the US then it would be okay to go ahead with LiveScan.
Is it possible that I will just request my school to hand me over the documents(sealed)  needed from my school and I will be the one to mail it to the Board of Registered Nursing in California once I’m there? Or is it really the school that has to mail the said documents? Can I request it ahead of time for them to send before I would send my application since I’m planning to send it to California once I’m already in Maryland, USA.
Supposedly its really the school that would have to send the required forms. But most schools do not offer such service so what we do is have them place all the documents in a sealed envelope with signature and school seal and then you mail it like its coming from the school. Do you get the idea? I also suggest that you use a mailing facility that is near the school. And it would be better to have your personal application sent first just for reference rather than having all the school documents first than your own application. To also minimize the chances of your documents getting lost.
And since I will be taking my oath this April in Manila, and I believe that the ID license will not be available that soon would it be possible that I will just have to send a copy of my diploma and board certification (once available) together with my other applications and just give them an explanation letter for the reason why I could not give them the ID license that soon? Will i state in my letter that once the ID license is available and that’s the time I will be sending them a copy of it?
Yes you are correct. But it would be better if you can give them a certified or an original copy of your certificate of passing and board rating. Then just send a copy of your license once you have it on hand.
Will it affect the processing time of my papers? Or better yet that I will just not state the the ID license will come to follow.
It actually depends on who evaluates your papers. But usually the certificate of passing suffices. Since they are asking for a copy of your license I think you should follow through with it so whenever your license is released just send them a copy.
Thank you so much Ms. Joan for reading this mail and hoping that you could assist me in the processing of my NCLEX RN.  Hope to hear from you soon and hope to receive a mail from you soon regarding my inquiries.  More Power to you.  My prayers are with you. God Bless!
Glad to be of help. You can view more articles in the site that may help you with your application. Feel free to leave a comment in the site and I would reply to them as soon as I can. Thank you so much for your continued support and good luck with the application.
P.S. Hope that this communication would be open for any future inquiries regarding my application.  Thank you in advance.  Thanks for the time as well.
No problem feel free to message me anytime.

    Hi there Ms. Joan,
Thanks for patiently addressing all my queries on your email. It really gave me a clearer view this time on how to start with the processing of my NCLEX application. Your website is truly helpful. More Power!

    Ms. Joan,
I saw in some of the post here that in sending your requirements to the Board of Nursing in Ca you commneted that a cover letter has to be attached together with the requirements and letter of explanation. can you give me an idea as to the content of the cover letter. Thanks

I agree with what Joan about sending the application way ahead of time before leaving for the US. That’s how I did it before. I sent my application on October 06 and by January 07 I received my eligibility and scheduled my examination on the last week of March 07 since I already bought my ticket to come to Cali dated March 15.

The only concern I have with the new grads eager to want to take the NCLEX is that, with the recession happening here in the US, and with more and more US residents taking nursing too, competition is tough. Here in the bay area where I live, almost all hospitals have freezed hiring RNs. According to almost all my RN friends here, hospital’s priority is to hire LVNs who took the RN exam and passed it. I have friends here, they were US educated and yet it took 8 months before they were able to get a job. Right now, the chances of getting petitioned by a hospital is very low. Unless you have a green card and have a social security number, then you’re not running against time.

So my suggestions for those who plan to take the NCLEX exam are:

For those who have a tourist visa, while you’re still in the philippines, search the internet for job openings in different states. I suggest that you don’t go for california because getting a petitioner here is almost close to impossible. I mean, like what I’ve mentioned earlier, even US educated individuals have a difficult time getting a job offer, what more to those who needs to be petitioned right? If you really want to work here, go for other states. Try emailing them (while you’re still there sa pinas) and ask them if they are willing to petition para at least you’ll know.

For those who don’t have a tourist visa, I suggest you really think twice about getting the NCLEX exam this soon. I highly recommend that you take the CGFNS and the english tests because with those examinations alone, you can come here in the US (if you apply thru an agency). Currently, applications to come here in the US are dated back in 2005. So, with the immigration breathing down on our necks, baka mag expire lang yung license mo. Remember, when you pass your exam, you have 3 years to get a social security number so you could get your license. The only way for you to get a social security number is if you get an immigrant or working visa to the US.

As for US permanent residents, you guys are lucky, you don’t have to race against time and you can just take the examination whenever.

So those are just some tips. I have been petitioned too and I know it’s tough.

uhm.. hello there! Im just a little confused about sending the applications. I have read in your older articles that it would be faster if I asked someone from the US to send my application…

The address in my application is from the Philippines. The address I will be using to send the letter to the BORN will be from the US. Will this do? Will I still receive my ETT?

Lastly, the Breakdown of Educational Program and Transcripts letters… My school does not mail these letters for us. We have to mail it ourselves. Why cant I just staple the application, and these envelopes and have them sent together in the US(mailed by a family member) instead?

There’s also the matter of the fingerprint card. I was born in LA, CA. Is there a code for that?
And the Race. Asian decent: AZN or Asian?

Im done with almost all of the requirements. Jst the mailing thing that bothers me a lot.

HI! am sandra… and i just graduated BSN in the philippines last March 2009… I wasn’t able to take the NLE coz my immigrant visa will be expiring soon and i need to go here in the U.S. to avoid revocation… nwei, i went here in CA and started filing my application for NCLEX… I already had my file number but I still have to work on the documents that are to be submitted by my school… And now, i moved to a new location and thought that i should immediately notify the BON about the change of my address… I already sent the completed form (which i got from their website) to them and its been a month but i never heard anything from them since then… I was waiting for their reply, for as to know whether they’re already updated my info; only to find out that i’ve sent it to their ‘generic’ address and not to their ‘more specific’ address where all revisions/renewals where being processed… My question is, would they be processing it by now? or should I send another completed form to them? Coz I am just worried that they might be sending communications to my old address and am not even notified of what to do next… hope, you could help me out… thank u…

Nice website by the way… GOD speed!
