NINA

Hello!
I want to ask if it is possible for me, a newly licensed nurse here in the Philippines to work abroad even if I don’t yet have any hospital experience as an RN? Because I’m planning to take the nursing board exam in (Sacramento)California. And your site had a lot of information about the application process. Thanks! With regards to my application, I am still torn between taking the nclex exam first or working first in a hospital. What’s it gonna be? Hoping for your reply. Thank you so much! God bless!

Hi Nina the answer to your question depends on a lot of factors. It would always be best to have a Philippine RN license because in California they usually ask this as part of their requirement. But if you are an immigrant or a US Citizen then that might not be much of an issue. Having experience will always be good to have on your side. Some employers may not require it but I think it would it would give you a good advantage if you have one. Experience in the field of Nursing will give you more opportunities not just in the US but to other parts of the world. Hope I was able to answer your question :)

YURIY

Hi Joan. I am planning on taking NCLEX to become a nurse in Michigan, which requires going through CGFNS. The first part of my story happened three years ago. At that time I had nursing college #1 diploma from abroad. I applied to CGFNS for credentials evaluation but had trouble with getting the answers to CGFNS requests from my college. To be more specific, my college did send a copy of my diploma with transcripts, but when CGFNS required additional clarification regarding course descriptions, my college refused do provide them (bitter corruption so to say). So, I canceled the case. Keep in mind that CGFNS has the copy of my college #1 diploma and transcripts on file. The second part of my story: I went to a nursing college #2 abroad and just graduated. My nursing college #2  diploma alone is completely enough to be admitted to NCLEX. I know people with exactly the same credentials who went through CGFNS and are nurses now. Now, when you apply to CGFNS in the application they ask you to provide your past case number, if you’ve ever applied previously. So, I have college #1 and college #2 diplomas. It seems there is no way to mention two but ask CGFNS to evaluate just college #2 diploma (which I need). Also, I can’t hide the fact of my college #1 diploma because I have to provide my previous case number (they’ll see instantly what was in the old case). I’m 100% sure that now I can’t get any correspondence from college #1, no request from CGFNS will be replied to by them, they wouldn’t even send the copy of diploma again.

Which brings me to the question. I’m applying for the second time now and providing my old case number. Do you think CGFNS will require college #1 diploma and transcripts to be resent again, or what they have on file form the past application will be enough? If they want the documents to be sent from both college #1 and college #2 regardless of what happened in the past, but receive documents from college #2 only, will they start evaluating college #2 or will be waiting for all documents to arrive? If they begin to evaluate college #2 and see that credentials are enough for NCLEX, will they let me take the exam despite the fact of no response from college #2? Can I do anything to help solve the problem or increase chances of success? Do you know of any similar cases? Thank you for advice.

Wow this is a pretty complicated situation and to be honest this is the first time I have encountered such. I find it confusing why you needed to get a Nursing degree twice. But since its there already, I think it would be possible to reapply with CGFNS with a new case number I think that doing this will eliminate the confusion between College #1 and College #2 considering that with what you were saying CGFNS did not acknowledge college #1 right? How long has it been since you applied with CGFNS? It might be possible that your previous application might have been cancelled out already but then again with your CGFNS ID number that is a permanent thing . Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

MHEE

Hi, good day. Just dropping by to ask something since every one here getting a good response. I just recently pass nclex here in chicago then still waiting for my license coz they told me to pay another 50 dollars which I really didn’t expect. But then, I want to work in virginia and planning to get reciprocity there. I am really not sure how long it would take and wat really are the requirements as well as the process in doing it. I really want to start my job as soon as I can, but, as I look in hospital requirements here they do want to have RN’s who are already experienced and obviously I am not. What can I do? Hope you could make my confused thoughts straightened. Godbless to everyone. Oh! I’m a new grad from PHil too.

Here is the thing you cannot change a hospital’s mind if they prefer somebody with hospital experience. It is always good to volunteer as that gives you some form of experience that you need and it might open opportunities for you later on. Also it would help if you make up your mind and stay in one place. If you decide to push through with Virginia make sure it would be the best choice for you. Because transferring your license from one state to the other takes a lot of time and money.

hi… i am applying for nclex in the state of cali.. my documents were already sent there (from the philippines) but unfortunately CABON did not accept my documents anymore due to the new policy which requiring for SSN.. i was advised to look for another state which do not require SSN.. my problem is, i do not know what state that require NCLEX-RN only? because some states requires CGFNS, IELTS or TOEFEL.. i need an advice on what am i going to do..pls.. its highly appreciated.. thank you.. i need it to be done quickly.. help me.. thank you

Well I hate to bring this to you but this new law by the CA BON we really cannot do anything about it. Like what you said, you just need to find a state that will work best for you. Most of the states do require either a CGFNS, IELTS, TOEFL, CVS and the like. If you are really determined to take the NCLEX-RN it would be wise to any of these things. Come to think of it, exams such as the IELTS can also be useful in applying to other countries so its like hitting two birds with one stone. I cannot make the decision on which state you want to apply to aside from California. Once you made that decision fulfill their requirements and you are good to go.

hi miss joan!ü please help me. . . very confused. . . i need to endorse my cali license to vermont, its about to expire. . . dont want to retake NCLEX-RN anymore. . . where should i start?? i have many questions in my mind, please help me. . .First, i know i need to apply for CES, but there are 2 types of CES report, which one should i apply for? Healthcare Profession and Science Report, or Full Education Course-by-Course Report??

Any of the two is accepted by Vermont.

Second, Vermont requires Candidate Report from California, how will i apply for it?? Third, does the Request for Academic Records For Credentials Evaluation Service should really come straight from my school or can i include it with my application. Same as with the Request for Validation of Registration/License For Credentials Evaluation Service from PRC?? Super thank you miss joan. . .ü

You need to write a letter to California BON requesting for a copy of your test results and pay $10. Any school records should come from your school and not from you. CGFNS is very strict when it comes to these things. As for PRC, yes and they will not allow you to send it for them. I hope this helps good luck!

Q&A: Transferring to Vermont, Green Card Holder and more…

Friday, May 14th, 2010

JOANNA

hi, im a greencard holder, i wish to take the nclex in LA.. i didn’t take the NLE in PHIL. will i still need to write an explanation letter? also, sa pag apply sa nclex, should i pass ALL together the forms (diploa, fingerprint) or unahin muna ung application form? then, dpat bang sabay ung pag pass nung school ung TOR ko and den my application or unahin mna ang application forms? please help me. im reallyconfused. thanks

You will still need to write a letter of explanation even if you are a green card holder. You will pass your application form first together with the other requirements such as copy of your RN Diploma, Fingerprint Card etc. All school records should come from the school not with your personal application or your own address. It does not matter which one goes first though, it would be better if your application comes first just as to have a basis as to what the school records are for. The more important thing is that the school records will come from the school NOT from you.

hi miss joan!ü please help me. . . very confused. . . i need to endorse my cali license to vermont, its about to expire. . . dont want to retake NCLEX-RN anymore. . . where should i start?? i have many questions in my mind, please help me. . .

First you need to download the International Nurse NCLEX Pass Endorsement Application. Most of the information you need are there.

First,  i know i need to apply for CES, but there are 2 types of CES report, which one should i apply for? Healthcare Profession and Science Report, or Full Education Course-by-Course Report??

You can choose any of the two. They accept both reports.

Second, Vermont requires Candidate Report from California, how will i apply for it??

You need to write them a letter requesting for a copy of your test results and have it sent to the Vermont Board of Nursing. Do not forget to include a payment of $10 for the said request. It should be in a form of manager’s check payable to the BOARD OF REGISTERED NURSING.

Third, does the Request for Academic Records For Credentials Evaluation Service should really come straight from my school or can i include it with my application. Same as with the Request for Validation of Registration/License For Credentials Evaluation Service from PRC?? Super thank you miss joan. . .ü

All of these should come from the school especially if you are to send it to CGFNS. They are very much particular when it comes to these things. So be sure to follow their instructions carefully. Hope this helped :)

ES

ask ko lang po kung pwede ba akong magupdate or mag address change over the phone…??? thanks po…

That depends on what state or what application you are pertaining to. You have to be more specific.

BEVERLY L.

Good day! i wouldlike to ask the requirements for getting a visa screen? can i get a visa screen even if i don’t have an employer yet? thanks a lot!

Getting a Visa Screen is usually a requirement of an employer and yes you could get one even if you do not have one yet. Basic requirements in order for you to obtain a Visa Screen is a BSN degree, NCLEX-RN Passer and IELTS or TOEFL passer. If you do not have any one of these I would suggest completing first such and then proceeding to applying for your Visa Screen.

VANESSA

you know what we have exactly the same case, cali to IL license, same prob no SSN,….our difference is just that im here right now in IL for a vacation, i can take advantage of my stay to process…but im not also sure of the outcome, i called BON CA, they say i can do the verification licensure part with them even without ssn, from there we can have a good start,…prepare the aplication for lic, cgfns ces report, live scan finger printing… fees to complete on the packet requirements before submission…really im kinda having a headache with all the steps, paper works and etc..please advise as well with anyone who’ve got expert knowledge…can we do endorsement process…without ssn yet.

Endorsement will not be an issue even if you do not hold a SSN because the state where you hold a current license will just need to verify that you passed the NCLEX and they will endorse it to the state in which you applied in. The main issue will be even if your license is transfered they might not be able to provide you with an actual license if you do not hold a SSN. But this will vary depending on which state you are applying.

Q&A: CGFNS Requirements, Missing Passport and more…

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

TIN

hi Joan! thanks for ur time ..my  first NCLEX was for California but i am now trying to apply for NY.what steps should i do?i am quite confused.MY research tells me that I need to have my credentials verified by CGFNS first (NY credentials verification) and then they will be the one to forward it to NYSED.MY question is.,,for the credentials verification, there are 3 forms to be printed, signed and notarized, do i have to print it out and send it to my alma mater first to have them notarized or should i send all 3 forms to CGFNS?i have all my documents with me, do i need to have some docs or forms to be filled up by my alma mater in the phil?

It seemed like there is only one document that needs to be notarized (the part with the attestation). The others are just letters authorizing CGFNS to obtain records from your school and licensing. But the signature in all of these documents should be alike.

ELEANOR

Hi Miss Joan…I’m just worried regarding my CGFNS CES application because I’m planning to take my NCLEX here in Arizona. All my transcripts were noted received and still waiting for approval. I didn’t forwarded my marriage certificate and college diploma which bothers me a lot. Do I need to submit them? Is it delaying my application? Do I need to take IELTS? Your help is very much appreciated. Thank You. God bless!!!

I don’t think they will be needing your college diploma since they have all your other records such as the transcripts etc. They would need your high school diploma though. As for the marriage certificate if you declared your married name then they would be needing your marriage certificate (see questions #2 and 3 of the form). Taking the IELTS or not will depend on the state which you applied in. If you have any doubts or questions about your application signing up on the CGFNS website is the best way to keep posted with your application. They do a very good job of informing you any problems with your application either via email or snail mail.

YURIY

I have an important question about CGFNS. How can I ask it on this website. You seem to have some many great questions answered here but I still couldn’t find the was to post one. Please advise

Just leave a comment like everyone else does and I shall get back to them as soon as I can. I usually email people asking questions if an answer is up and running on the site :) Looking forward to your question :)

JOAN

Hi Ms.Joan I have a huge huge problem BON is asking for my passport but I lost my passport which has all my arrival and departure info. What do I have to do? Hwat should I submit to them in replcament of my passport info. please help please. Thank you so much.

They are asking for your passport why? Not that I am trying to pry or anything but it helps to know the circumstances around your situation. First things first, you need to file an affidavit of loss for your passport you cannot just let that pass by. I think the DFA might have steps on how to go about such information. If they need your passport information then maybe the DFA might be the agency that can help you out with such. You also need to inform the BON that your passport was misplaced but at the same time have some proof that you took action on the case thus the affidavit of loss (as proof).

MSAR

i am a little confused right now.. don’t know where to start.. well, i am planning to apply for an endorsement/reciprocity from a california license to ILLINOIS but since i am here in the Philippines, i still dont have an SSN to finish the application form, i am afraid to submit the APPLICATION FOR LICENSURE BY ENDORSEMENT and pay the amount not sure if what im doin is right.. please help me or assist me in a way, the best way i should do to have a good start and finish everything smoothly.. bottom line is i want to be a licensed nurse in Illinois even if i passed NCLEX in california.. no SSN yet, no LICENSE NUmber no everything to fill up and finish the forms.. please please need help! thanks alot! hoping for your reply..

It will be fine even without a SSN when you just submit the form for license verification from Illinois to California attach a copy of the letter that California sent to you as reference and pay the fee for endorsement. I hope this helped.

Q&A: Changing or Updating of Address, ATT Information and more…

Monday, April 12th, 2010

SANDRA

HI! am sandra… and i just graduated BSN in the philippines last March 2009… I wasn’t able to take the NLE coz my immigrant visa will be expiring soon and i need to go here in the U.S. to avoid revocation… nwei, i went here in CA and started filing my application for NCLEX… I already had my file number but I still have to work on the documents that are to be submitted by my school… And now, i moved to a new location and thought that i should immediately notify the BON about the change of my address… I already sent the completed form (which i got from their website) to them and its been a month but i never heard anything from them since then… I was waiting for their reply, for as to know whether they’re already updated my info; only to find out that i’ve sent it to their ‘generic’ address and not to their ‘more specific’ address where all revisions/renewals where being processed… My question is, would they be processing it by now? or should I send another completed form to them? Coz I am just worried that they might be sending communications to my old address and am not even notified of what to do next… hope, you could help me out… thank u…

I don’t think that they send a reply when you request for a change or name/ address.  I did the same before and didn’t get a reply from them I just assumed that they got my request and updated their records. If you want you can give them a call if they received your request. Whether you sent it on their PO Box address or their actual address they’d receive it. Most of their mail are sent in the PO Box address they just give their specific address because some couriers do not accept mails to PO Box address.

MACKEY

hi miss joan ask ko lng po medyo naguguluhan ako..US citizen po ako but d2 ako graduate sa pinas and d2 narin lumaki.d ko na po ba kailangan ng tofel or ielts and local license?i aquired my citizenship through birth and already got my ss number.

The IELTS/ TOEFL is not necessary unless indicated by the state you applied in. Since you took Nursing in the Philippines you might still need to fulfill that requirement.

FENG

thanks for the help….but i still another question/problem ang that is i cant remember the month when was i last applied my exam….is it right if i just put in when was i last received my eligibility?thanks again…..

They are looking for the date you last applied for the exam not the time you received your eligibility those 2 dates are far apart from each other and is not accurate. They might need the specific month to track back on your documents etc. Try to look at receipts from couriers or at least give the closest estimate from the time you received your eligibility if you really cannot remember the time you applied in California BON.

ES

hello po ask ko po sana what if nagpaprocess ako ng eligibility sa NEAC and then gusto ko na kasi magpaATT and i want to do it on my own ang concern ko kasi yung mga infos like address and phone number baka hindi magmatch… paano po yun..?? kasi syempre nung prinocess nila yung eligibility ko address nila yung nakalagay…

The question is, is your eligibility with you? because that is the most important thing. If it is, then you can always file for an address change so that results of your exam will be forwarder to you and not to them. The application for the ATT is done with Pearson Vue not with the Board of Nursing. If you worry about the date being different I do not think it would be much of an issue since the important thing with your ATT is that your name should match your ATT and your passport. You just need to change your address so that results of your exam will be mailed to your address and not theirs.

TIN

hi i need your help badly.I took my nclex last 2008 and i failed.I took it in the philippines and my att laready expired.I am here in NY now and i want to reapply for NCLEX..what steps should i do?where and how can i apply for my att?please advise..thank you

In which state did you apply for your first examination? If you applied in New York you would have to get the form for Reapplication/ Reexamination. And before getting an ATT you would need to have a letter of eligibility from the Board of Nursing of your choice.

FRANCIS

Hi Joan, I am Francis, one of the avid readers of your advice. I emailed you because I want to ask you something about my application for NCLEX examination. The thing is, i already received my eligibility letter a year ago when im still in the Philippines and I am now here in U.K. I now want to continue my application for nclex, my question is if i submit my registration form from here, i will use my current address here in U.k., do you think it will create confusion and delay my ATT? And one thing more Jo, coz I already paid $107 for application and fingerprint card, do I need to pay another $200 together with my regstration form? Sorry Joan for bothering you, I hope you have time in reading and responding to my question. Thnak you and God bless. More power..

You can always file a change of address for free in the California Board you can find the form in their website. As for your ATT, it would not be much of an issue since you are filing the application for that in Pearson Vue not with the CA BON. The important thing with your ATT is that your name matches the one written in your passport. The $200 is for the registration at Pearson Vue so yes it is necessary to pay that. And if you are to take the exam outside the US then you would have to pay an additional $150 once you schedule for an actual test date. Go ahead with your filing and update your address at CA BON and you are all set. Do take note that once your register with Pearson Vue you are ONLY given a year to take the examination. Thank you for your question and let me know if you have further clarifications… definitely not a bother ;)
