Sad to say they have made revisions with their process and effective immediately they are no longer accepting applicants without SSN. So if you intend on applying to CA BON and do NOT have a SSN you are just wasting your time and they will just return your application. First of all download the application form at the California Board of Registered Nursing site. And then there will be forms from the site that the school needs to accomplish then together with that they will send a copy of your TOR and RLE. The course description is not necessary until they request it from you. If you are applying in California there is no need for your to have yourself evaluated by the CGFNS and/or ERES. Request fingerprint cards also at the California BON site and then fill out the necessary information and then have the actual fingerprinting accomplished at the NBI. It would be better if you wait for your actual license before sending your application since there have been recent problems encountered by others with regards to that.

Hi, ms. joan. nakita ko po yung format nung letter of explanation. pero po yung reason ko po kasi ay dahil napakabagal or sinadyang bagalan ng aming eskwelahan na tapusin yung mga requirements namin para mag-apply ng board exam. may palakasan at bayaran na nangyari kaya yung iba ay nakapag-apply kahit na sila ay hindi karapatdapat magboard exam dahil hindi naman maganda ang class standing sa school. papanu ko po i-explain na ganun ang nangyari. baka hindi naman ito tanggapin ng state board. salalamt po. sana matulungan nyo ako.

The board does not need to know everything that is happening within the grounds of your school. So no matter what reason you give the thing is you were not able to take the board exam and the issue is way beyond their control. My best advice is fix the necessary papers you need for school so that you can be able to file at PRC to take the board exam this coming December. And then once you pass, apply to the California Board of Nursing.

I have this concern regarding my eligibility notice. I received it july 2008, unfortunately my family name was mispelled, a typographical error. Im just wondering why would they mispell it, in my application, license, diploma i submitted were spelled correctly. where will I open this concern? i applied in california. would it be okay if i’ll fax it to them than mailing it? I checked the site and it just said 2×2 passport type picture. I don’t think the background would be much of an issue. If it was then they would inform you about it.

another question: sa fingerprintprint card ko ang date na nakalagay is march 8, 2008 kung kelan ako nagpunta sa NBI. sa school requirements mARCH 2 2007 (last year pa ang nakalagay na date kasi di ko xa namail kagad last june 2007 dhil undecided pa ko magnclex).. this july 17 2008 ko lang naiforward sa BON.. sa Application for examination na finil-up-an ko july 15, 2008 ang nakalagay na date. sa bankdraft ko july 16, 2008..

I cannot give you an exact answer but the date differences with your documents are really big. Anyways, all you can do now is just wait and if there would be any problems the California BON will let you know via a letter. The interval of mailing is fine and what you did with the mailing is correct.

Yes that is possible. You are given 2 years to register with PearsonVue by the California Board of Nursing. Then once you register with PearsonVue you are given a year to take the examination. Just a piece of advice, take time to sit down and plan your schedule in terms of reviewing and more importantly settle for a test date.

It depends on the state you plan on applying to. But safe to say average waiting time would be from 3-6 months. It is never to early to prepare for the exam. Even if review programs last an average of 3 months you would still need to do some self reviewing and apply what you learned in the review program. If you feel its too early to go to a review program you can do some self review and then once you get your letter of eligibility that is the time you apply to a review program. The important thing is you set some goals and guidelines on how you will go about this whole process. Set a target date on when you plan to take the exam and how to go about your review. Good luck!

You can use anyone’s credit card just be ready with all the card information of your friend. You can use any VISA or MasterCard credit card.

“CA gives you three years to present them with a SSN#, or your file is destroyed and you start all over again. For those of you that decided to go with CA anyhow, you can apply to another state for licensure by examination while you still have a valid file with CA, and have them forward the results, and then get a license that way. Make sure that the new state issues a license without a SSN#. Suggest that you do not do that until it has been over two years of waiting, until you know what will be happening with visas

Well it is true that the CA BON is really just giving three years to provide them with a SSN or else your file will be destroyed and you will have to do the process all over again. This is indeed a tough position to be in considering the issue with the visa and the retrogression.

madam, i already received my LOE few weeks ago, only recently i found na mali ung Street NAME address ko, instead of Rosarito St.,, Rosario st. ang nakalagay. this august plan ko ng magregister sa pearsonVue. i checked the photocopy ng application for licensure by examination na pinadala ko sa kanila. tama naman ung nasulat ko na Rosarito St. di kaya magkaroon ng prob.? i already e-mailed CaBON pero wala pa silang sagot. Please HELP!! thank you.

My best bet would be to call CA BON and inform them about the mispell. But then when you apply for your ATT you will be prompted to place your address there and just make sure that when you do get your ATT no mispelled information would be written especially with your name. It is far more important to have the ATT correct in comparison with your valid identification.

Once you pass the local boards you need to go to the website of the State Board wherein you want to apply in. In your case that is Washington or California. From there you can download an application form by examination. Once you get the forms you will see the requirements that are needed in that state. Fulfill those requirements and once you get approved, you will get a Letter of Eligibility (LOE) allowing you to take the NCLEX-RN exam. From there you will register at PearsonVue and then receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and then schedule an exam date. That’s the process in a nutshell but of course you have to bear in mind that it takes time applying wise.

Yes you will need to re-register and pay the $200. Even if your ATT is valid for one whole year it doesn’t mean that you can reuse it in retaking the exams. It is valid for one use only. The validity is there to give you time to schedule an exam date that is convenient for you within that time period. So if you plan to take the exam in the Philippines aside from the $200 registration fee there will be an additional $150 for international testing.

In general here are the three basic requirements the Illinois Board of Nursing is asking from you a CGFNS CES Report, TOEFL & NCLEX Examination but before you start with this of course you need to submit your application with the board. For a detailed information regarding this you can download the application form at their website. If you can take the local boards I suggest that  you to take it first as a lot of states inquire about your local license.

Hi Dom… I checked the 2008 Candidate Bulletin (Page 3, Registering Via Mail) that you can still pay using cashier’s check, money order or certified check. You cannot use the mentioned methods if you are going to register via the Internet or by phone they only accept MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit cards or debit cards.

Regarding the Letter of Explanation… Arlene stated that it wasn’t removed from Cali Bon’s Website. I looked it up.. under Exam Application, it is stated: Submit a copy of your license or diploma that allows you to practice professional nursing in the country where you were educated. If you do not hold a license, a written explanation is required. So yes, the written explanation is actually still there. So I am wondering is this really for sure that we have to take the local board if we are US Citizens? or I am wondering if it depends on who or which agent processes the application. Because seems like some people can’t get approved for the Nclex like the guy Dennis, but the other guy eventually got approved without taking the local boards. Thanks!

Its very confusing at this point but I think with what you said about which agent processes your paper can also be an added factor in your chances of getting approved. If you can take the local boards take it just as an added precaution on your part. If you cannot due to time constraints or some other reason then just be ready to state your case with the CA BON if you are asked for further documentation once you apply.

Usually results arrive via mail. Once you pass, you download the VisaScreen Application handbook and the procedure in applying will be included in that handbook. You do not need to take the CGFNS exam to obtain a visascreen. Its either you just pass the NCLEX-RN or the CGFNS exam.

It’s okay that you only sent one fingerprint card. I am not sure about the difference in address in your application and fingerprint card. Application seems to take longer now waiting period can be 3-6 months. Once you receive your letter of eligibility its faster to get your ATT especially if you are going to register with PearsonVue online.

I am not sure if we are on the same page here but I kind of checked the registration online were you pertaining to the PROGRAM CODE? For the Philippines the International Education Code is 99-425 you can see this at the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin. If your aunt will send payment for your NCLEX-RN it should come together with the application form. It might get misplaced if it is sent separately. What she can do is send the draft to you then mail it together with your forms or the other way around.

If there is a way to contact the Saipan Board maybe you can just write to them inquiring about how to transfer your license to Texas and request for the needed application forms.

Since you are talking about your ATT you need to inquire about this with PearsonVue NOT the California BON. The important thing is that in your actual ATT all the information there is correct because that is the one that would be compared with the accepted valid identification when you take the examination. Please take note that the acknowledgement receipt is different from the ATT.

I am not sure if there are any state that gives out permanent license without SSN. And NO board of nursing gives out SSN this is a matter that deals with another branch of government agency and any boards of nursing will not be authorized to give out a SSN.

Yes you can use a US address as your address for ALL the forms needed. I believe mailing would be faster if you do so.

I’m really sorry but I am not sure about the specific states that do not require local boards. In addition, application process takes 3-6 months the least. Just try to search it out over the Internet since most Board of Nursing have their own sites. But my best advice is for you to apply in a state where you have relatives since this would benefit you in the long run.

hi ma’am..i’m about to complete the requirements for NCLEX Cali.. i’ve already downloaded the form. here are few questions that bothers me:
1.when printing the form kelangan po ba short bond paper??

Yes. The forms were made to fit the short bond paper size (8.5 by 11)

2.handwritten ang pag fill-up??

When you open the form using Adobe Reader you can type in your information. If you are to do it handwritten just make sure to write in print.

3. photocopy po ba lahat ng documents na isusubmit??

No. Only the copy of your PRC license will be the photocopy. Other documents should be original specifically the one coming from your school.

4.if i have a relative in california..is it faster if they will process my application there??

The process itself will not be faster BUT the correspondence in mailing would be faster since its in the same country and state. But just make sure that your relative in California can relay to you any correspondence coming from the California BON.

Now that the results are out, how will I be able to tell them that I already passed the local board exam? Will i just mail them the copy once I get the license? You need to send them a copy of your license or atleast a certification from PRC that you passed the local board examination. I just fear that without this, this might prolong the process of your papers. Its just that recently a lot of people have been asked to do so a letter of explanation is not accepted at this moment. As for the fingerprint cards I am not sure how this would affect the processing of your papers so just verify this with them.

You can take it at any branch of the NBI who have these services. The important thing is that the fingerprints are done by a professional.

This cannot just be obtained by merely applying it involves a set of guidelines and you need to be a legal US resident before obtaining one. You are required to have a SSN in order to obtain your permanent license in California and in working in the US.

What I did was I attached a copy of the letter that they sent informing that you passed the exam. Together with that place a bank draft of $60 payable to Board of Registered Nursing. It takes around 6 weeks to process. They will be the one to send this to CGFNS.

They do not require the CGFNS examination BUT they require you to have the CGFNS Credential Verification Service for New York State.

You do not need to send these forms to your 2 previous schools because like what they said your final school where you got your nursing degree should have reflected in your transcript whatever subjects were credited in your previous colleges. So you just need to send the school forms to the college where you had your nursing education. Just make sure that subjects that were credited are reflected in your transcript.

HI There. With regards to your first question the answer is YES. Based on what was written on the form and since you will really not have the opportunity to practice in the Philippines as you are already moving to Texas. As for the paper works, you can download the application form at the Texas Board of Nursing Website. Some things you might want to accomplish prior to leaving are the documents needed for the CGFNS CES Full Eduacation Course by Course Report.  Especially the one that your school and the PRC needs to accomplish. The VOL means Verification of License I think that if you are going to do the CGFNS CES Report you would not need to do another VOL for your license here in the Philippines.

Right now in California they are requiring you to have a license in the country where you were educated. But some are still giving it a try even without the local license. If you want you can take that chance and explain your case why you do not hold a license back in the Philippines.

Hi There. Right now from what I am reading it seems like a license is needed from where you were educated. There are a lot of people who are having problems now since they did not take the local board exam. I suggest that if you have an opportunity to do so, do take the exam. But if you would still choose not to take the local boards then just be ready to explain your case.

You just have to do either one of the two. So either you register via the application form that came together with the candidate bulletin or register via the Internet.

You do not need a social security number yet in terms of applying. Once you pass, the California Board of Nursing will be requesting for your SSN before they can release your license.

I am a US citizen and a psychiatric technician here in California and I enrolled for BSN course in the Philippines (because the financial cost is much cheaper), but I heard from a friend that after finishing the course I am required to take the local board, before I can apply for NCLEX here in US, but I have no intention of working in the Phils. Hi There. Recently, most people who have the same status as you are (US Citizen) have been asked by the board to present them with a proof that they passed or took the local boards in the country where they were educated. I remember them saying about even if you are a US Citizen you can be permitted to take the exam but not given a license. But some just stated their case and were granted to take the exam even without the local board exam. But if you have time to take the local exam even if you do not have any intentions of practicing in the Philippines I would suggest doing so. You would need to submit some documents for the school to fill up which is included in the forms when you download it at the California BON site.

Unfortunately, that number isn’t just applied for. In order for you to get that you would need to be a legal US resident. So the next thing to do is find for an employer that can sponsor you to be able to work in the US. And within that process once you are approved to work in the US that is the only time you will be able to get a SSN.

I am not sure if your tourist visa will get you anywhere in terms of after passing the exam. If you are interested in getting a tourist visa then you have to talk or inquire with a travel agency about this. I am not sure if the 3 year validity of the NCLEX is for all states. The thing is though I inquired about this to the California BON and did not get a reply. So I cannot give you a straight answer about this issue.

With the recent comments from people and with the replies these people are getting from the board it seemed like now even if you are a US Citizen or Immigrant they would want you to take the exam. I know that most of you guys will say that you guys are not eligible to have a license in the Philippines but they say that you can take the exam but just not issued with a license. Though nothing has been made official regarding this if you can take the local boars do it. At least there would be lesser problems on your part when you apply in California.

You definitely need to take the NCLEX-RN exam in order to be able to practice nursing in California. Though there had been recent changes with the requirements one of which is  holding a license where you were educated. I do not know how you are going to attack this since its been a while since you graduated and plus the fact that you migrated. Maybe the best thing to do is explain your situation to the board why you do not hold a license in the Philippines.

Nope. Getting a SSN is a whole new different process.I think you get to see your name on the roster once you get your permanent license and that entails obtaining a SSN.

Some states require having an IELTS score so you just have to check with your state board if they require it and what score they need. The VisaScreen requires the IELTS and overall band score needed is at least 6.5 with no grade lower than 7.0 in the spoken part of the exam. If you are to take the IELTS exam please choose the academic module since that is the one that is required for nurses. As for the hospital experience or training that will depend upon your employer.

Congratulations! I wish I could answer your question regarding the expiration since I inquired about this with the California BON and so far I haven’t gotten any response from them. Well getting a SSN can be pretty complicated but the best thing to do right now is gain experience and at the same time look for the right employer so you can start working your way towards your goal in becoming a nurse in the US.

Hi there. You can follow up your application by giving them a call. If you would ask a relative to call for you just make sure that you explain your situation (about submitting the necessary forms and its been 3 months since you applied) and give them your complete information specifically your complete name and address. Also make sure that your relative would be able to ask them the right questions such as if you have any lacking documents that needs to be submitted etc. Hope this information helped.

im still waiting for my fingerprint card to arrive, the thing is when i went to several banks to inquire about the bankdraft, they all have additional charges.they told me that im going to pay $126 (application fee + fingerprint card fee) and an additional $10 for the exchange fee and Php 108. talaga bang ganyan? any advice regarding bankdrafts?

Glad to be of help. Unfortunately, I was not able to do the bankdraft in Manila since I had a relative in the US  and just had them take care of that. The total fee for the BON is $126 (application & fingerprint card fee) and make sure you make the draft payable to the BOARD OF REGISTERED NURSING. Usually, banks will really have fees for processing your bankdraft I think its just a matter of choosing which bank will have the lowest fees for the processing.

Each state boards may have diferrent protocols in terms of the validity of your letter of eligibility. But once you do register with PearsonVue and get your ATT you are given a year to take the examination.

Hello Joan! Did u go to the Us as a Tourist and did u use the NCLEX as ur reason for applying for a VISA? If yes, I have some questions please:

I am sorry but I had my tourist visa long time ago so I cannot answer your questions. If you intend on taking the exam in a US territory such as Saipan I think they have special visas just for taking the exam. You can inquire about this with a travel agent.

Your eligibility is valid for 2 years. So with that in mind they are giving you 2 years to register with PearsonVue in order to obtain your ATT. Once you register with PearsonVue, and received your ATT that will be valid for one year.

Inquire about bank drafts in various banks.The best way to do is explain to them what you need the draft for and more or less they will get the idea. Just make sure that you take note to whom the draft would be payable to and also know the exact amount needed to prevent errors and delay in your application.

Yes that is possible. You just need to give an authorization letter to the person you will be sending to get your license at PRC and together with that letter a copy of your valid identification. The diploma they are talking about is actually the diploma that you get from PRC not the school diploma its either that or a copy of your license.

Hi Matilda. Before you can take the NCLEX-RN examination you need to apply to a specific US State. Once you have submitted all the needed requirements amd get approved you will receive a Letter of Eligibility from themsaying that you can take the NCLEX-RN exam. When you get that letter that is the time that you can register and schedule for an examination. Hope this information helped.

I know you are confused and frustrated but all you can do is to comply with their request.  So submit a copy of your license or if it would really take a long time before you can get your license what you can do is submit a certification from PRC that you passed the board exams and then once you get your license send them a copy of it. Then have the school answer these 48 questions and request for a copy of your school curriculum. I had the same experience like yours specifically on the part about the school curriculum despite me being able to submit my TOR and all school related documents. If your school asks what is the school curriculum its basically a course description of all the subjects you took to obtain a nursing degree. So that means all the subjects you took from first year to fourth year of nursing school.

You will receive your results via mail usually in 2-4 weeks after you took the exam. But please take note also that release of the results may vary on a lot of factors so what I gave you is just an estimate. Your name will not be automatically in the website since the names listed there are those people who have their actual licenses. In order to get that you need to have a SSN.

I am sorry to hear about this news. You would need to reapply with the California BON (please take note that they have a different form for reexamination) and wait for another Letter of Eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN examination. Once you get your new LOE then you can reregister at the PearsonVue site and then receive a new ATT. You can only use your ATT once so your old ATT is not valid anymore even if it expires on December 2008. Also there is a 45 day waiting period before you can retake the examination.

First of all what state did you apply in? Because there are some states that are eligible for quick results wherein you get to see if you pass the exam via the Internet but you pay a minimal fee to get the result. But please take note that not all states have that. Also bear in mind the mailing system either here or in the US may be experiencing problems as well so take that in to consideration. If it reaches the two month mark which is on July 19 you can try giving them a call and just try to be as assertive as possible in expressing your dilemma and obviously this is not your fault that the mail isn’t coming through. Just try to get the best answer out of them when you talk to them and hopefully you could reach some sort compromise that can satisfy both parties.

I actually haven’t seen the new Philippine Passport but I take it aside from the signature they look at the name and other information in the passport. To be safe, just bring other valid identification such as a driver’s license or PRC license that has your signature. Besides, it is beyond your control if the new passport does not have a signature.

I have been reading your site, and am in the same situation as Dennis (FilAm, U.S. citizen, graduated nursing in PI).  I applied late January 2008 to California bon, and received a letter asking for date of entry into U.S. if I was a migrant, and a copy of my license or diploma authorizing me to practice in the country where I was educated.  I called to clarify, was asked to send in a copy of all pages of my U.S. passport, and I again sent a copy of my diploma with a letter explaining that I did not take the NLE as I intend to work in California and am a U.S. citizen.
Again, I waited, and just today 7/8/08 found out I WAS APPROVED!!! I was told I can now register with Pearson and schedule to take the NCLEX!!

I believe California may be in the ‘process’ of changing their requirements, however, it is not clearly stated on their website.  To those of you in my situation, you may want to take the Philippine board right after graduation, just to be certain.  It would be a good practice also.  I believe a U.S. citizen can take the exam, only not be licensed in the Philippines (with a waiver).

Sa website po ng rn california gov i dont think na inalis na nila yung letter of explanation please try to browse it again nasa page 2 po pa rin ng application. Ms. Joan please help us, update nyo pa kami what is the latest requirement ng CA BON kasi waste of time and money po kasi kung mapadala namin ang application form without any license babalik ulit sa amin. Thank you for clarifying that but as much as it is written there based on recent applicants they are really requiring you to have a license in the country where you were educated. The best advice I could give you is to take the local boards and obtain your license before applying so there would be lesser worries on your part. Also if you notice the actual application form it is really stated there that international applicants should send a copy of their license where they were educated. There was no mention of a letter of explanation. Hope this information helped.

To be sure I would advice having it mailed via Fed Ex. It would arrive sooner as compared to using Philippine Postal Service. And more importantly, you can track your mail via the Internet and know when it arrives its destination.

The thing is it might take more time if you request for another set of fingerprint cards. As long as the cards are not folded or have dent in it then it would be fine. Just make sure that when you mail it back to the board make sure that you protect it from being folded or dented.
